  • The class includes Kyosuke Hara from Honolulu, Hawai’i, OSU-Beavers  Shawn Lu, from Honolulu, Hawai’i and Diego San Pedro from Richmond, British Columbia.

“One question I’m often asked is what do I look for in recruits,” Reehoorn said. “A key factor or maybe predictor of success at the college level is how they finish in junior events on what I know to be a difficult course. Last summer, Shawn, Kyosuke, and Diego all finished inside the top 15 at the Junior Americas Cup at Shaugnessy Golf Club in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Shaugnessy Golf Club is a tremendously difficult course, which has played host to the PGA TOUR’s Canadian Open. In winning the event, Shawn was the only player to finish under-par for three rounds. At the beginning of next year, 10 of the top 20 players in this event will be on a Pac-12 roster.

“As freshmen, these three young men will add great depth to a team next fall returning almost everyone. But I know they aren’t looking to add just
depth. They expect to help us compete at a high level immediately and I wouldn’t be surprised to find all three of them in our starting lineup in the same event at some point next year.

“Diego, Kyosuke, and Shawn will bring a passion for the game of golf, competitive nature, and most importantly a love for Oregon State. After visiting campus last year, each of them quickly knew Oregon State was a place they could call home for four years. Just as important as identifying individuals who we believe can help us compete at the Pac12 is finding individuals who fit who we are culturally and are excited about what we can accomplish at Oregon State.”

    Diego San Pedro
San Pedro is the No. 1 ranked 2016 player in British Columbia by the Junior Golf Scoreboard. In 2015 he finished seventh at both the B.C. Junior Boys Championship and CN Pacific Future Links Championship, eighth at the Western States Junior Players Cup and 14th at the Canadian Junior Championship.

In 2014 San Pedro won the B.C. Juvenile Boys Championship and finished second at the FCG National Tour Fall Championship. He also placed sixth at the San Diego Junior Amateur and tied for 15th at the Junior America’s Cup.

Jon Reehoorn (OSU Men’s Golf Head Coach) on Diego San Pedro: “Diego is the kind of person you meet and want to spend more time with. When talking with people about Diego during the recruiting process it was easy to recognize just how much people truly like him. As a golfer Diego has a very strong overall game.

“Each time I watched Diego play a tournament the last few months something different about his game stood out to me. He is a very good iron player who also has a very solid short game, and has a tight miss pattern off the tee. All of these things add up to someone who I hope will develop into a very consistent player who can be counted on to post solid rounds each time he tees it up.”
