  • Canadian Filipino archer Crispin Duenas advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 30-year-old Toronto native, however, did not proceed to the succeeding stages of the archery competition after he lost the round to Zach Garrett of the U.S.

Duenas previously prevailed in the Round of 64 against opponent Marco Galiazzo of Italy.

The Round of 64 followed the qualification round to open the archery competition at the Rio Olympics.

In that qualification round, Duenas found himself in familiar territory.

Duenas ranked 18th among 64 athletes in the qualification round. He ranked 16th and eighth, respectively, in the ranking round at the Beijing Games in 2008 and London in 2012.

Duenas went on to finish 39th and 33rd overall at those Olympics, and secured a spot for Rio at last year’s World Archery Championships.

Duenas, who shot a Canadian record of 685 at the official Rio test event, is part of a two-member Canadian team with Georcy-Stephanie Thiffeault Picard.

Duenas’ parents are Rolando and Helena Duenas. He started archery at age 13.

The Olympic archer works as a high school substitute teacher (math and physics).

Duenas has a degree in physics from University of Toronto in 2011 and Bachelor of Education in 2013.
