Gil siblings in back-to-back Cinemalaya films

Two feature films on Filipino families will be shown back-to-back today at the Cultural Center of the Philippines at the Cinemalaya Film Festival.

Mana, an award-winning film based on a Visayan folklore, delves on familial relations after the loss of the matriarch of the clan. The siblings find themselves in long-delayed confrontations, decisions, and debts.

Directed by Gabby Fernandez, Mana won the Best Feature Film at the Madrid International Film Festival 2015 in Spain, besting 14 other entries. Cherrie Gil, who co-starred with his late brother Mark Gil, was also awarded Best Actress for her performance.

On the other hand, A Day With Grace tackles the life of a young lady and her struggles to free herself from an abusive father. It is a time for transformations and redemptions, and more importantly, it is about a woman’s courage to do whatever it takes to be able to move on.

A Day With Grace was the last film with Mark Gil. This thesis short was the first in a series of academe-film industry partnerships from the School of Design and Arts (SDA) Production Design Department of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. (MS)
