  • SURREY— An NDP Government will cancel Canada Post’s plan to eliminate door-to-door mail delivery and will reinstate delivery in all communities affected by cuts announced in December 2013.
“Since home delivery has been cut, we have seen break-ins to community mailboxes which leads to lost mail and has put the people of Surrey at risk of identity theft,” commented NDP MP Jinny Sims (Newton – North Delta).

“We believe protecting the people of Surrey’s privacy and information to be of key importance, and a big factor in re-instating door-to-door delivery in our communities.”

For the past year and a half, Canada Post has been implementing a sweeping, five-year plan designed to end door-to-door mail delivery for 5.1 million Canadian households. Hundreds of mayors have complained about this decision, and expect it will generate legal and logistical problems in the near future. Hamilton and Montreal have already launched their own legal challenges.

“Hundreds of municipalities are speaking out against Canada Post’s unacceptable plan to eliminate home delivery of mail – and they want this plan stopped,” added Sims. “The NDP will stop the plan to eliminate home delivery for millions of Canadians – and restore home delivery where it was already cut.”

New Democrats are listening. Reinstating home delivery mail service will help those in greatest need.
