Documentaries come and go. Few have the heart of Dark Horse. Made by Sony Pictures Classics this modern fairy tale looks at how a group of commoners rose to the top  with a little help from a friend. Spend your money wisely by taking in this whimsical documentary currently raising eyebrows at The Vancity Theatre  to check out the inspirational trailer go to www.viff.org. And it is well worth braving the Burrard Street repairs  heading into downtown Vancouver to take in this folksy charmer though an easier way is Granville Street or transit,

Imagine a group of down and out town folk taking a gamble. Well, that’s exactly what an enterprising lass did when she had a dream and made good. Setbacks and heartbreaks aplenty followed Jan Vokes around when she came upon the idea to give birth  ( not herself) to a baby horse that would try to race. Never say die, this feisty bar waitress went on her way to convince other town folk to go in on her dream and enough of them ponied up some money to give it a shot.

Everyone loves a winner and somehow this syndicate of new  Welsh horse owners would take their dream machine, affectionately called Dream Alliance, to the upper levels of British horse racing.. You have to see this story to believe it. Made up of interviews with as diverse a group of original people you could ever come up with its great fun to watch and listen to their goals and aspirations. Naysayers and non-believer aplenty cross their paths but had it not been for one determined thoroughbred with a heart of gold this movie could never have been made.

Complete with a look into the world of major league racing In Britain this tale of the underdog trying to win against all odds will definitely bring the house down. Bet on it.

Whether you’re a gambler or not you must see this movie. And if you feel lucky check out local horse racing live at Hastings Park on the PNE grounds in East Vancouver. Free admission and a lovely mountain-ocean backdrop ensure a good time out . See the ponies run on  and Saturday Sunday afternoons and Friday nights in August . Call (604) 254-1631 for more information or go to www.hastingsracecourse.com. And the track has   their own Hastings racecourse club that locals can become a part of for just $250!
