Team up two of the biggest stars in Hollywood history and throw them into an “ epic” period piece and you may just have an appealing movie. That’s exactly what unfolds in Iron Mask, a new and exciting swashbuckling epic from VVS Films. Chart a course for adventure by contacting your local cable company or internet provider to unmask the iron mask.

Back in time we go to the age of dragons. Two prisoners on different paths hold the key to survival in this far-fetched fantasy that spans the globe – or at least the mysterious Far East. Holed up in a jail manned by an evil gatekeeper are, amongst others, an aging Chinese “criminal” and a said to be “deposed” leader of Russia. Man of all seasons and countless broken bones Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) portrays the aging Master. Alongside the masked Peter the Great the two bid their time under merciless jailor James Hook. None other than Arnold the Great , former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ( Commando) returns to the screen as this comical caricature who delights in facing off and beating down his prisoners.

Against this backdrop in 1700 a roaming map maker makes his way to of all places China where a village is being run by a tyrannical witch masquerading as a Princess . Jason Flemyng ( Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) keeps a straight face throughout as Jonathan Green, a man of mystery who winds up in the middle of a battle royal complete with a real princess out to recapture her throne against the wishes of a evil witchy woman.

Made In2019 under the original name Viy 2 this two hour fantasy has the dubious distinction of receiving lots of negative reviews. Reality check to all those arm chair so-called movie experts: wake up. It’s only a movie. This is meant as a tongue in cheek B-level film and on this level in my mind it works. You just can’t take this nonsense seriously – nor should you. All the over the top performances and crazy one liners by Arnold are fun to see and hear. The whole film is stupid but it is so bad it’s fun and a guilty pleasure. ;Iron Mask provides loads of action and combines science and technology with history and ancient mythology.

Go ahead, be brave and check out Iron Mask. (Robert Waldman)
