YVR SCREEN SCENE ANNOUNCES FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINE

YVR SCREEN SCENE FOR UKRAINE
A gala evening in support of humanitarian efforts in Ukraine featuring a special screening of Maidan

VANCOUVER, BC (March 7, 2022) — On March 30, the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people will fill the big screen at VIFF Centre as part of YVR Screen Scene For Ukraine, an evening in support of humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

The centrepiece of the evening is a special screening of Maidan, Ukrainian filmmaker Sergey Loznitsa’s powerful 2014 documentary about the civil uprising against the regime of President Viktor Yanukovych that took place in Kyiv in the winter of 2013-2014. Maidan screened at Cannes Film Festival and was called “[the] most rigorous, vital, and powerful movie of 2014” by the Village Voice.

YVR Screen Scene For Ukraine will include a performance by bandura musician Ruta Yawney, as well as a post-screening reception. The evening will be hosted by Ukrainian Canadian actor Adrian Petriw (The Dragon Prince) and podcaster Sabrina Rani Furminger (host and executive producer of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, and herself Ukrainian and South Asian Canadian).

All money raised from YVR Screen Scene For Ukraine ticket sales will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal established by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

“Since Russia’s barbarous and unprovoked aggression began, the world has witnessed the spirit, grit, love, and fearlessness of the Ukrainian people,” says Petriw. “They are persevering, taking the fight to a madman who expected a nation to kneel…But they are human beings, and they are facing a humanitarian disaster.”

YVR Screen Scene is also hosting an online auction featuring memorabilia, autographed collectibles, and filmmaking services donated by members of Vancouver’s film and television community. The online auction will run from March 21 to April 4.

“Over a million people became refugees in the first week of the war, and countless more are displaced within Ukraine,” says Petriw. “Those who can’t leave, or won’t, lack basic supplies as they face constant bombardment. They need our help, and I can’t sleep knowing there’s more we could be doing.”
YVR Screen Scene For Ukraine takes place on Wednesday, March 30 at 6:30 PM at VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver). Doors open at 6:00 PM. Tickets are $25 and are available.
