Dominic, Marvin: A ‘Super’ reunion

Dominic Ochoa is excited working anew with best buddy Marvin Agustin via superhero fantasy drama TV series “My Super D” that started airing Monday on ABS-CBN.

“I’m thankful na tinanggap niya (’yung project). It’s been almost 10 years na kaming huling nagka-trabaho,” said Dominic. “Okay pa rin na nagkasama kami. Wala namang pinagbago.”

Dominic, who plays the titular role on the new Dreamscape Entertainment Television series, recalled he last worked with Marvin on the defunct “Whattamen.” Since then, Marvin has also become a successful restaurateur and, for a time, concert producer.

“Alam mo si Marvin, hindi ka magtataka na umabot siya sa ganyan kasi very hardworking siya. Aligaga ’yan ever since and his hard work paid off,” Dominic said.

Dominic maintained he and Marvin are close as ever. In fact, they have never missed attending each other’s birthday celebrations all these years.

“Hindi naman mawawala ’yun eh, ’yung pagkakaibigan namin. Hindi mo na maaalis ’yun. Kapag tunay mong kaibigan kahit matagal na kayong hindi nagkikita, once you see each other (ay friends pa rin kayo). At saka noong burol ng tatay ko nandoon siya araw-araw.”

While Dominic has mostly been doing supporting roles in the recent past, he doesn’t feel bad about it at all.

“Hindi naman matamlay magbigay ng trabaho ang ABS-CBN sa akin. I mean, I’m so thankful na every year hindi ako nawawalan (ng project). Ito lang, parang mas bigger responsibility. Mas mahirap ito,” he said.

On “My Super D,” Dominic plays Dodong, a security guard who is an avid fan of the deceased superhero Super D (Richard Yap) and is fond of helping others. His son Dennis (Marco Masa), meanwhile, grows up in a simple yet contented family and admires his father for his dedication to help people who are in need.

However, with Dodong caring so much for others’ welfare, he tends to forget his duties as a father and often disappoints his wife Nicole (Bianca Manalo). After Dodong lands in jail for being allegedly involved in a construction accident, Nicole makes the hard decision of leaving Dodong and raising Dennis on her own.

After being freed from jail, Dodong works as a stunt double for Tony (Marvin), an actor in a children’s show and his longtime rival for Nicole’s love. Here, Dodong also meets Pablo Mateo (Nonie Buencamino), the show’s writer and one of Super D’s closest friends. Upon seeing and knowing Dodong, the writer realizes that he could be the rightful man who can take Super D’s place as mankind’s defender against evil forces.

One day, Dennis gets kidnapped by a group of unknown men, and with the help of Pablo, Dodong gets a grab of the powerful Blue Gem and turns himself into Super D, saving his son’s life from harm.

From that day on, Dodong relives the legacy of the late superhero and starts his own journey of fighting crimes and saving lives as Super D.

Dominic is not worried on how the show will fare ratings wise.

“Kasi maganda ’yung sulat, maganda ’yung istorya, maganda ’yung material. So kampante ako. ’Yan ang grupo na gumawa ng ‘100 Days To Heaven’ na nakasama rin tayo so alam ko na ang kalidad ng trabaho nila, kung paano sila magsulat,” he said.

“I’m very thankful they offered me this role. Masaya ang Pasko nu’ng binalita sa akin ito. It didn’t matter to me whether it’s small or big. Ang akin lang, you have to give 200% ng kakayanan mo…”

Will he do his own stunts on “My Super D?”

“As much as possible, yes. Hangga’t makakayanan ko ay gagawin ko.”

Being in show business for 19 years now, we asked Dominic on the secret of his success.

“Pakisama at respeto. Kung marunong kang rumespeto ng tao, wala kang tinapakang tao, wala kang nasaktan, wala kang nasabing masakit ibi-bless ka talaga.”

“My Super D” airs weeknights before “TV Patrol.”(A. Brosas, mb)
