Tomorrowland (G) *** Brave New World!

Science and fantasy join forces and make for a potent mix in Tomorrowland. Visually stunning and full of promise this latest non super-hero kid’s flick from mouse kingdom Disney will be lapped up by little ones and those into full throttle escape fantasy. Board a spaceship to the stars and see some bonafide stars and a couple of soon to be household names at Cineplex Odeon theatres across B.C.

Journey to the stars and there’s no telling where you may up. Little boy Frank Walker dreams big and makes a habit of creating inventions. One science fair outing at the 1964 World’s Fair the bright boy latches onto an idea and a new found friend and winds up in outer space before going back to Earth.

Years later the older version, played by newly married George Clooney (Ocean’s 11), finds himself immersed Ina wild space race urged on by two small kids. Girl with a past Athena holds some deep dark secrets while reluctant tagalong Casey Newton realizes her potential may not yet be tapped. Watch out for the demand to heat up for Raffey Cassidy and Britt Robertson who are really put through the paces.

Full of wonder and inspiration Tomorrowland is a grandiose land of make believe souped up with spectacular futuristic sets. Who knew space travel could be so much fun – or ominous. Boyhood innocence is also well displayed as are some big social questions involving how we are treating Planet Earth.

Excitement kicks in with the race/chase on as two little girls try to head off an impending/imploding disaster of unparalleled consequences and upheaval. Relevance of parent/child issues also provide lots of ammunition in the emotional minefields that youth must endure.

Directed and written by Brad Bird Tomorrowland may be a few minutes too long in length but more the makes up for it with a very clever and fun story. Made in B.C. Though you would recognize few local highlights expect Tomorrowland to click with young children and folks wanting an inoffensive space opera with a Doomsday scenario minus the lasers and light sabers.
