  • Consider the nephew film about the life of Sherlock Holmes to be a significant departure from the Universal classics of the 1940s which catapulted Basil Rath-bone to international fame. Time heals old wounds and in EOne Entertainment’s Mr. Holmes we get to see the aging super sleuth do battle with a host of issues. Smart and effective Mr. Holmes is well worth checking out at the Fifth Avenue Cinemas and select Cineplex Odeon arenas, Born to play the quick witted detective is Sir Ian McKellen (X- Men).

Age has taken. It’s toll on the Englishman’s physical prowess – but not his mind. Safe in the British countryside this elder statesman gets first class care by Mrs. Munro, a busy body of a housekeeper envisioned by Laura Linney (Absolute Power). Together with her impressionable son Roger the trio don’t exactly make for a happy family.

Watch out for the work of relative newcomer Milo Parker who turns in a triumphant performance Skeletons of the past return to haunt Holmes and director Bill Condon (Kinsey) showcases the man’s ability to still use his mind to get at the truth. Gorgeous shots of the idyllic English countryside perfectly provide a fitting backdrop to the solid sleuthing of Ian McKellen whose portrayal here is superb. Consider Mr. Holmes to be a perfect fit for fans of mystery and iconic fictional intellectual masterminds.
